Description

Withymoor Scythe works One penny token Payable by James Griffin & Sons

Context

James Griffin & Sons - James Griffin & Sons were makers of agricultural implements. The firm was founded in the latter part of the 18th century by James Griffin who early in the 19th century took his son into the partnership. James died in 1818 and the son continued the business under the same name. Their factory was situated at the canalside in Netherton, near Dudley, Worcestershire, not at Withymoor in Staffordshire as stated by Davis. Although there have been several changes of name the company is still in business and in 1979 issued a copy of the 1813 token with a plain edge to celebrate their 200th anniversary.
