Context

On the Obverse: Worcester City Arms in centre with legend: “CIVITAS IN BELLO IN PACE FIDELIS which is the motto of the city of Worcester, and means ‘In war and peace, a faithful city’. Sometimes written 'Civitas In Bello Et Pace Fidelis', it is thought to refer to the City's support of the royal house of Stuart. In 1621 Worcester was granted a charter by James I declaring the City to be a county in itself, separate from the County of Worcestershire - 'The County of the City of Worcester'. This distinction came to an end with the reform of the local government in 1974.
