Description

A leather covered bamboo stick, with bulbous shape at the top to fit a hand. A silver plate ring around, engraved U. S. 1914.

Context

Originally used by Officers to direct drills, military swagger sticks also symbolise authority and discipline (c1700s). Swagger sticks serve not only as a visual emblem of rank but also as a tool for commanding presence. Among the many American Military personnel who have used them is General George Patton, who used one throughout WWII, although his, apparently, contained a concealed dagger! They are also used by police and parliamentary forces. However they are no longer a military requirement but can still be used by some officers.
