Description

Pair of children's kid gloves, white with small metal button to close.

Context

The wearing of gloves was connected with social status - an aspiration to achieve the "perfect hand" - smooth, white, with perfect nails, rather than a rough hand due to hard work. Until Queen Victoria's reign, gloves were quite short, finishing a the wrist but after 1835 gloves started to be worn between the wrist and the elbow. Short gloves continued to be worn during the day but evening gloves extended above the elbow to the top of the arm. Glove length was measured by the distance between the "base of the thumb and the top edge of the glove". A glove ending at the wrist would have two buttons, below the elbow 8 buttons and at the top of the arm - an opera glove - 16 buttons.
