Context

Newell's were an old Bristol company, which started c 1808, then known as Tripp & Co. Alfred and Samuel Newell Price were not involved in the company till the late 1800s. The specialism of the company was brown stone pottery. In the early 1800s they were specialising in patented stone ware drainage pipes and continued to make highly glazed stoneware for decades. Items included jars and bottles for all purposes, drugs, spirits, ale and stout, ginger beer (which is an important feature), ink, blacking, and varnish bottles, bread pans, jam and pickle jars. A large business was in foot warmers and also insulators.
