Description

A clamp, mounted on a wooden stand. The clamp was spring-mounted and operated by a foot pedal. Along the edge of both sides of the clamp were strips of brass with evenly spaced teeth which held in the glove firmly. The numbers 870 is engraved on one side of the brass clamp.

Context

The Glovers Donkey was invented in 1807 by James Winter of Stoke sub Hamdon and revolutionised the home-workers who were the majority of the glove makers. All gloves were stitched by hand and accurate stitching was of great importance and the Glovers Donkey both helped accuracy and speed. The Glovers Donkey was used at least up until the 1930s
