Description

Galvanised iron half bushel measure. A sheet of galvanised iron curved into a circle and riveted along one edge. A rim band and base band added for strength and two handles at the bottom part of the bucket for lifting.

Context

The half bushel is clearly marked with its size with BUSHEL written round the measure and the 1/2 above the top rivet. The mark of the inspector on the rim, rather indistinctly but possibly reading 846 LOD. Anecdotal evidence say the method to fill either a bushel or half bushel was to shovel the grain or oats etc. into it until it was overflowing and then rap the side once to settle the grain using a 'bushel stick'. The stick was then used to scrape of the surplus leaving the measure full but not overfull.
