Description

Copper milk cooler. Cold water was pumped through the inside pipes and the milk was cooled by running down the ribbed surface.

Context

Before the advent of this type of milk cooler, the urns may have been put in a river to cool - the lids being set at an angle to let the heat of the milk escape. Another way to keep the milk cool was to wrap cold wet bags around the urn.
