Context

A costrel is a flat, often pear-shaped, container for liquids, historically made of earthenware or leather. They are essentially an older term for a canteen or flask, typically with loops on the sides to carry on a belt or cord. Costrels were commonly used to carry drinks like cider or water on journeys, particularly during the medieval period and later, and are now sometimes replicated for historical reenactment or as decorative items. Characteristics of a costrel Shape: Often described as pear-shaped or barrel-shaped. Material: Traditionally made from earthenware or leather, but also sometimes oak or other materials. Function: Designed to be a durable and light container for liquids, making them ideal for carrying on journeys. Carrying: Features loops or lugs to allow it to be worn with a strap or cord around the neck or on a belt.
