The first mention is in oldest book known to humanity, the Indian Veda, some 3,000 years ago, then it's history can be traced through China, Egypt and the Bible. Archeology shows it was used in everyday cooking and religious ceremony by the Aztecs, the Romans and the Native Americans. The pestle and mortar has been used for both culinary and medicinal purposes to the present day and the apothecaries sign is of a pestle mortar.
