Avery's was founded early in the 18th century but only took the name W & T Avery in 1818. It became a successful and thriving family business but was shocked at the sudden death of Henry Avery in 1894. However it became a Public Limited Company and the managing director William E Hopkins turned it into the greatest weighing machine company in the world. The roots of the company still survive in Avery Weigh-Tronix.
