Description

Wooden handle with a steel shank which is attached to a revolving wheel. The wheel has teeth. The handle has a leather piece with a hole, perhaps for hanging up in the workshop.

Context

The tool is marked, on the handle, with the makers name - Richter & Sons, Nottingham. It also has the number 17 - which could refer to the number of teeth on the wheel, these can vary from between 7 - 18. Fudge Wheels are also referred to as Welting Wheels, The Boot Rand Wheel or the Wheel Jigger. The first illustration of the fudge wheel appears in c 1800.
