Description

Brass Skirt Lifters

Context

Skirt lifters were Victorian accessories, essentially small clamps on chains, used by women to lift their long, heavy skirts off muddy streets or floors, preventing them from getting dirty and allowing easier movement for activities like walking, climbing stairs, or even cycling, keeping expensive outer fabrics clean and preserving reputation. They clamped onto the hem and connected to the waist, enabling quick elevation via a cord, chain, or pulley system
