Description

Characteristic round brown glass bottle and metal lid. Paper advertising adhered to front of the jar

Context

The Marmite Food Company was created in 1902. The spread is dark brown in appearance and has a "gooey" texture. The study of the fermentation properties of yeast reach back into the 17th century but it wasn't till 1902 that the commercialisation of the waste product in yeast could be made into a meaty flavoured concentrate, that was vegetarian. Still made today with little variation - the lid is no longer metal but plastic and the logo has been modernised. The lid says: For the Table: Dissolve a small Teaspoonful in a Breakfast Cup of Boiling Water For the Kitchen: Blend with al SOUPS, GRAVIES, SAUCES, STEWS, ETC. Excellent for SANDWICHES Too Much Spoils the Flavour (round the lid) The Small Crystals in Marmite Present Animal and Essential Food Constituent of the Extract.
