Two wooden sticks joined centrally with an iron bolt. This twitch has decorated handles but no attached rope or leather.

Context

Upper lip twitching and ear twitching have been used for centuries to calm horses. However ear twitching which involves twisting the base of the horses ear, has now been proved by scientists that it is very painful and therefore ineffective in calming a horse. Lip twitching however does allow approximately five minutes of time for the vet to carry out a procedure before the horse begins to show signs of stress.
