Description

A Small Crotal and a Smaller Crotal, use to adorn Horses or Livestock

Context

Small crotal bells are antique, spherical rattles often made of bronze, brass, or pewter, historically used to adorn livestock, horses, or for personal accessories. They feature a loose metal pellet inside that rings when moved and are frequently found by metal detectorists, dating from the medieval period through the 19th century. Usage: Originally, these were attached to livestock (sheep, cattle) to track them, or on horse harnesses (above the collar) to indicate movement.
