Description

A thick cast iron body with wick and handle. The lamps were usually fuelled with colza oil (a type of rapeseed oil) which could also be used as a lubricant in engineering because it didn't dry up. The top unscrews in order to add the oil and insert the wick.

Context

Made by A C Wells and Company of Manchester who also made a variety of oil lamps for both industrial and domestic use. The 'Engineer' was first manufactured c 1880. It is said that it was used extensively on the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal.
