Scope and Content

Historical information about Alto Fair for the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration in Waupun, WI ALTO FAIR The Alto Fair, co-sponsored by the Alto Farm Bureau and the area 4-H Clubs opened in 1976, for their 30th annual event. It is a 2 day affair, featuring competition and entertainment for the whole family. It begins with a ham and egg breakfast - the ham and eggs being made in a five foot fry pan. Usually pancakes and sausages are served on the second morning. Many things comprise the competition events, livestock judging and later they are auctioned off, usually a tractor pull, a parade, trap shoot, state wide horse pulling contest, women's baking contest and a water fight. There is free entertainment each evening. The 4-H Club members display their projects of sewing, baking or gardening for competition in the new Alto Community Center. Merchants of the area rent booths and display and demonstrate their products in the booth tent. Many door prizes are awarded. Many people have wondered why this small community decided to put on its own fair unstead of going along with the county fair. They also wonder how it has become so successful. What does a community do when its religious beliefs prevent it from taking part in a fair that which runs on Sunday, yet feels that its interest need such an outlet for its farm and youth activities? Back in 1947 the Alto Farm Bureau and the Alto Boosters 4-H Club decided to hold their own fair in the village of Alto. The first fair was held Sept. 11, 1947. The first canteen was in a garage. Today, a large tent is erected over the large black top floor that was laid in 1960, and the food is served in the tent. The first two-day fair was held in 1953, and it has been two days ever since.
