Scope and Content

Historical information about Augie the Barber for the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration in Waupun, WI Augie the Barber, August Sabel, started his profession bak in July 1935 at the age of 16. Attending Moler barber college in Milwaukee. After serving his apprenticeship, he opened up his own Barber Shop in Elkhart Lake in 1938 which he operated until going into the army, July 1941 serving for 4 ½ years. After his discharge from the army, he opened a Barber Shop in Campbellsport, where he methis wife Millie, who operated a Beauty Salon there. In 1948, Augie decided to learn the beauty tricks on the G I Bill. After selling his shop, he enrolled at the Milwaukee Accredited school of Beauty Culture. Upon graduating, he got married to Mildred Mengel, now his wife. They operated the Campbellsport Beauty Shop till September 1950. Augie and Millie spent the winter in Florida. Due to sickness in the family, returned back to Fond du Lac in May 1951. At that time, Mr. Fred Ihde operated a barber shop in the Odd Fellows building in Waupun. At the age of 8, Mr. Ihde had a stroke so the shop was closed and for sale. Augie heard about it from his salesman. He came to Waupun and bought the shop May 26, 1951. Being a beauty operator he was just about the only barber that would cut ladies and girls hair. Home permanents were very popular at that time, so Augie was the place to go for your haircut and trim. He also was the first shop to have a telephone and make appointments. After several years in the location he was in, he moved, 2 doors up, but still in the Odd Fellows Building, which was vacated by Mr. Gilbert, a cleaning & pressing shop; giving the restaurant a chance to have a dining room, which was next to him and his shop was more practical for that reason. On Mondays, Augie does the barbering at Rolling Meadows and . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Nursing Homes in Fond du Lac. Active in the beauty and hair fashion, attending every course available in haircutting and shaping, being a licensed beauty operation enables him to work either barber or beauty shop. After 25 years in Waupun, and barbering since 1935, I feel I've done my bit as a full time barber. Save manuscript for Augie *This information was handwritten by Augie so it was typed as written.
