Future Farmers of America
One of the best examples of youth in action on the American scene is the FFA - the national organization for students studying vocational Agriculture in the public high schools. It is an organization run by student members under adult leadership.
Soon after vocational Agriculture became a subject in many of the nation's high schools in 1917, instructors became aware of the need to provide practical training beyond the traditional classroom approach. Their ideas to make the instruction more interesting by making the actual experience such as livestock judging and agricultural leadership part of the course.
FFA was founded nationally in 1928, after many similar organizations had begun in several states. FFA stresses leadership, co-operation and citizenship, all vital to success in modern agriculture.
Today, the FFA has a membership of over 485,000 with chapters in approximatey 8,500 high schools throughout the nation. All states, except Alaska and Puerto Rica, have state organizations.
Men who molded America came from farms and plantations - former statesmen of the past like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Future Farmers today are inspired by these same heros of our Nation and her agriculture.
