HISTORY of THE WAUPUN CENTRAL LABOR COUNCIL
First organization meeting was held April 1940, over the Old Eagles Tavern. Delegates from Five Labor Unions were present. Boot & Shoe, Local 432; International Association of Machinists, Local 1516; State, County & Municipal Employees, Chapter No. 26 of Local 1 (18); State, County & Municipal Employees, Chapter No. 8 of Local 1 (178) and Teamsters Union, Local 920.
Temporary Officers were picked. Chairman, Mr. Frank Zubke; Vice Chairman, Mr. Harry Buckholz; Rec. Secy.,Miss Laverne Radke; Fin. Secy. Mr. Lyle Bryant; Sgt. of Arms, Mr. Ed. Cardiff; Trustees, Mr. Al Lauden, John Woodhouse and Wilber Hoffman. The Name selected was, The Trades & Labor Council of Waupun.
The Charter from the AFL was signed June 24, 1940. The first Election was held July 1940 with the following Officers elected. President, Mr. Frank Zubke; Vice President, Mr. Harry Buckholz; Rec. Secy., Miss Laverne Radke; Fin. Secy. Mr. Lyle Bryant; Trustees, Mr. Al. Laudon, Mr. John Woodhouse and Mr. Melvin Maas. Adoption of the Constitution was held November 19, 1940.
Many activities were sponsored over the years such as; Several Labor Day Celebrations, Poultry Shows, Talent Shows, Dances, Bingo Parties. Sponsored several Youth Dances at the City Hall and a Youth Center was tried but failed after a short time. Council and Locals donated to buy a Wheel Chair for City use. Also to the Chamber of Commerce for City Street Christmas decorations.
The Council and Locals donated to the Old Development Division of the Chamber of Commerce. Council and Locals also bought Stook and Notes in the Waupun Industrial Development Corporation. The Council has bad a delegate to the Industrial Development Corporation for many years.
The first Hall was over the Old Eagles Tavern, then accross the street to the Gerrits building for a short time, back to the old Hall for many years. The Council moved to 306 1/2 East Main Street, May 1957.
A special presentation of the New Charter from the AFL-CIO was held October 19, 1967. A new Constitution was adopted in 1966 and the name was changed to The Waupun Central Labor Council. A Building Fund was finally started in Jay 1966, which in years ahead could mean a New Labor Hall for Waupun.
