WAUPUN Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution The Waupun Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution was organized, Jan. 21, 1902, founded to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence. Charter members were, Mrs. Anna Bacon, Mrs. Viola Hooker Bell, Mrs. Edna Ferris Bush, Mrs. Carolina Weed Hinkley, Mrs. Leila Martin, Miss Celia Martin, Mrs. Eva Mocher Rank, Mrs. Jessie Walker Scott, and Miss Irma Walker. Mrs. Hinkley was elected as Regent. As the chapter grew, officers and committee chairmen were elected. History study was encouraged and prizes were awarded for excellent work. Monies were raised for Red Cross, Belgium Relief and for gifts to the Waupun Public Library. Above the mantle in the library the chapter placed a bronze tablet in memory of Waupun's fallen heroes of World War I. Bronze tablets were placed on the gravestones of daughters of American Revolutionary soldiers - Mrs. Jane Walker, Electa Carrington Mosher, Melinda Harris Clintsman, Lucinda Johnson Butts, and Sarah Leavitt Sanhorn. In 1926, Newton's woods were about to be sold to a lumber company. The chapter was instrumental in the purchase of them by Fond du Lac County for a city park and wild life refuge. During World War II, Elsie Wood served as chairman of the Red Cross work. Bessie Cladwell, Edith Scott, Minnie Hooker and many others did responsible work by giving of their time and abilities. A Waupun Cook book was compiled by Eva Rank and Viola Bell and the proceeds donated to various DAR projects; such as the Indian work, Continental Hall, Northland College, Martha Berry School, Kate Duncan Smith school and Tanassee school for Mountain children. Good Citizen's pins have been presented each year to six girls from Ripon, Brandon, Markesan, Beaver Dam and Waupun High Schools. In the year of 1965-66 all the requirements of the National Honor Roll were met. The Silver Award was earned the following year and the Gold Award in 1970-71. The chapter sponsored the entry of Valerie VantHoff in the NSDAR History Scholarship contest. She won first place in the state competition and enrolled in Central College, Pella Iowa, as a history major. Regent Mrs. Mildred Gielbink and Mrs. Gertrude Rens joined the bus tour for Wisconsin daughters which visited DAR schools in South Carolina and Alabama. They also represented the chapter as delegates to the 64th Continental Congress held in Washington D.C. Fifty year members are, Mrs. Edith Donovan, Miss Sara Williams, and Miss Dorothy Symons.
