Historical information on Houdek Grocery for 1976 Bicentennial Celebration in Waupun, WI taken from Leader News records of October 22, 1964 and handwritten. Houdek Grocery October 14, 1914, Frank Houdek in partnership with Alfred Bernhard, bought the gorcery store at 306 E. Main from F. W. Kuechenberg. Mr. Houdek came here in 1908, worked in 1908 in a butter making creamery in Grenton and also one on Taylor Street where Peter Coal & Oil now stands. In 1937, Mr. Bernhard sold his partnership to Ernest Lenz. Mr. Houdek bought him out & was the sole owner until his son's discharge from the Army in 1946. Sausages were kept in the basement and an ice box held an assortment of meats. It was not until1936 that they put in a full line of meats. Up until the eary 30s, the basement contained a large assortment of toys & was called "Toytown". Mrs. Vern Verhulst was a long time clerk. In 1952, the store became self service and in . . . . . . the store was enlarged to use the Storbeck building.
