Hat, Prison Guard/Officer, Corrections, Wisconsin State Prison, Leinweber

Name/Title

Hat, Prison Guard/Officer, Corrections, Wisconsin State Prison, Leinweber

Description

Dark navy blue prison guard/officer hat with black leather viser and a silver band in front connected to hat with silver buttons. A silver badge is pinned in the middle which inidicates that this was an officer's hat by the name of E. Leinweber. This name is sewn in the hat in a name tag. The badge is silver with Wisconsin Division of Correction * Officer * engraved and the Wisconsin emblem in the middle. These items belonged to the Waupun Prison Guard, E. Leinweber (Edward, Eddie), who was the brother-in-law of Gordon Peppler. Edward Leinweber retired in 1975 because he turned 55 yrs. of age. Prison employees had to retire at the age of 55. He received a 25 YRS. pin so that would lead one to believe that he started work as a prison guard in 1955. The badge on his hat indicates *OFFICER*. He probably started out as a guard and then worked up to being a lieutenant or captain because the silver WSP pins were worn by guards and the gold WSP pins were worn by a lieutenant or captain. The big silver GUARD badge was Edward's when he was a prison guard.
