Scope and Content

Historical information on Hoard's Frigid Locker for 1976 Bicentennial Celebration in Waupun, WI Hoard's Frigid Locker The Frigid Locker was built and started in 1937 by Harry Hoard, who in 1946 erected the slaughter house and chill room addition. It was operated from 1942-48 by Mr. Hoard's son in law, Gordon Roberts, who sold it to another son in law Gordon Palmer, when he moved to Tucson, Arizona. Reportedly, the Frigid Locker Storage was the largest custom processing plant in the state, and the Waupun plant was one of the last strictly processing - storage type plants in operation. Most plants closed because of the increased sale of home freezers. The local plant had 700 locker boxes for customers. Live animals were brought in for butchering, cut and wrapped and quick frozen and placed in the locker box. Sausage and bacon and dried beef was also made for customers. 250,00 pounds of meat was processed yearly. The locker plant ceased operations on May 1, 1953. In March of 1954, Mr. Hoard sold the building to Blakely Auto Parts of Fond du Lac, and they will move from 434 E. Main to the new location. The Knoblock Sheet Metal and Heating business operated by Harry Knoblock in the rear of Storbeck's Hardware, moved May 1, into the building vacated by the Blakely Auto Parts.
