Hull's Shop Rite
Hull's Shop Rite now known as East Side Foods, at 534 E. Main Street is operated by Donald VerHage and Randy VerHage. They purchased Milton Hull's shae of the partnership April 1, 1977. Mr. Hull who has been active in grocery business since the mid 1930's will be semi-retired, working part time.
The business was begun almost 60 years ago as a big general store on Main Street as Lemmenes & Hull. In 1922, Mr. Lemmenes moved to California & sold his stock. It was then known as Sterken & Hull and moved around the corner on South Madison Street & handled only groceries.
In the mid 1930's, Gerrit Hull bought out Sterken and ran the grocery store with the help of his family. Sometime in the mid 1940's fire gutted the store. Son, Milton, bought the business and in 1953 bought the grocery store owned by Art Church and moved to 426 E. Main Street.
In 1963, the grocery store was moved to its present site as Hull went into partnership with Donald VerHage.
The location at 534 E. Main has been a grocery store for many years, having been the Kroger store back in the 1950's. Kroger rented the building from Nummerdor Bros in 1955. At that time it was remodeled from a garage to the grocery store.
Nummerdor Bros built a new garage at 25 W. Main Street, where they remain today.Acquisition
