Kiwamis History, Waupun, Wisconsin - 1965 The Waupun Kiwanis Club was organized March 26, 1929 and the Charter Night was held May 9, 1929 with 35 members being chartered. Of the original 35 members, none are still active in the club. The charter was presented by Harrison Wood, District Governor according to to the International records, but the club report states that Al. C. Steiner, the International Field Worker involved, did the presenting. The Heaver Dam Club was the sponsoring club and the first officers were David W. Barry, president; Secretary - Stephen Reep; and Treasurer, G. H. Jennings. The club has had some very meritorious projects. One of the first ones of consequence was the construction of a swimming pool at Fond du Lac County Park just outside of Waupun. This club organized the Community Chest; it has sponsored a Boy Scout troop; It contributed over $3,000 to the Hospital to enable it to purchase equipment for the nursery. These are all good, sound projects calling for planning and evaluating. The International Office considers these the most worth-while plans and the club is to be commended on its foresight. The Waupun Club with Ripon and Fond du Lac sponsored the Markesan Club in it was chartered on June 6, 1947. The Waupun Club also sponsored the Brandon Club which was chartered on January 15, 1951, but the charter was revoked on February 26, 1956. In addition to its projects, the club has contributed some leadership to the Division and the District in the persons of four Lt. Governors, and Three Different District Chairmen. Particulary outstanding was the ork of Myron Kastein, who served one year as Lt. Governor, and five years as District Chairman of the District Achievement Committee. A list of the men holding these offices in Kiwanis is given below: LIEUTENANT GOVERNORS. 1933 - Dr. K. A. Swartz 1953 Leonard Beske 1948 - John J. Nugent 1959 - Myron J. Kiwanian during the school months since 1964 where the qualifications are that they must be high scholasticaly but also very active in the own church. -------------------------------------------------------------- WAUPUN KIWANIS HISTORY In Brief The Waupun Kiwanis Club sponsored by Beaver Dam, was organized March 26, 1929, in the Community Room of the City Hall with 93 persons present. The biggest crowd ever fed at the City Hall auditorium as of May 9, 1929, assembled for Charter Night along with 35 charter members. The club immediately went to work holding a 1929 Labor Day celebration that cleared $1,000 for a swimming pool at the Fond du Lac County Park. Mabel McCune's property, the old stone quarry, was thought to be ideal for a pool, but was rejected after investigation because of the problems of getting a proper change of water. The late Dr. Kenneth A. Swartz was one person responsible for successfully guiding the Waupun Kiwanis Club through those first few years. The Waupun Kiwanis Club constructed an honor roll for servicemen in June of 1944, in front of the City Hall. A contribution of $3,000 was given to the Waupun Memorial Hospital to help furnish the nursery. Annual Kiwanis Christmas concerts were held for the community from 1950 through 1969 with credit for their success rightfully going to Leonard Beske. Kiwanis and Rotary have held a post prom party for high school students since 1955. We contributed to the Easter Seal Camp Waubeek swimming pool at Wisconsin Dells in 1954, 1955 and 1956. In 1956 Kiwanis built a lighted cross to be placed in front of the City Hall during the Lenten Season. In 1958 Kiwanis and Rotary presented the scoreboard on the Waupun High School athletic field. In 1960 the Kiwanis and College Club put on a variety show with our part of the proceeds going to help start a foreign exchange student program. The Kiwanis scholarship program for worthy students was started in 1965. The Waupun Kiwanis Club donated $2,000 for the development of McCune Beach spearheaded by Kiwanian. Mel Backer. In 1964 the Junior Kiwanian program was started by Kiwanis Support of Churches Committee in Waupun to honor students for their religious activity as well as scholastic ability. As of this writing, January 1973, Jack Keepers has 60 consecutive monthly interclubs, as Waupun interclub chairman, and we believe this to be a Kiwanis International record. The Waupun Kiwanis Club has been and is involved in many more outstanding projects too numerous to relate. Waupun Kiwanis Club Lieutenant-Governor and District officers are listed below.
