Koog's Keg
Eighty years ago, John Luck operated a blacksmith where the car of Koog's Keg now stands. Horses were tethered exactly where the bar is now.
You can still see part of the blacksmiths forge. The bricks were cleaned up and what remains of the forge is preserved as an interesting conversation piece.
To the west of the blacksmith shop was a grocery store - named Brown's Grocery and later Luck's Grocery. Now that store space is part of Koog's Keg.
Happy Schneider converted the blacksmith shop to a tavern in 1928 and called it Happy's Tavern.
Otto and Janet Krueger bought the tavern from Happy in 1943. Previously Otto had tended bar at Eagles and Fautsch's, so he was quite sure he could handle his own. Hot ham sandwiches were served over the years as well as Otto's famous hamburgers. Janet had always helped tend bar and helped with the duties.
Free fish fries used to be served but they had to be discontinued due to the cost years ago.
Otto's son Ron, worked a full shift for many years and then in 1974 he and his wife Barb, bought the business from Ron's parents and renamed it Koog's Keg.
Barb designed the new look for the tavern inside and out along the lines of a Swiss Chalet, it is a very pleasing decor and adds much "atmosphere" to the old tavern.
Otto and Janet still work in the tavern and it is truly a family affair.
Ron has been a volunteer fireman for many years and is on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce.Acquisition
