Martin's Bake-Rite Bakery
"We stress quality", said Mrs. Martin "Mary" Steenbergen of the bakery she and her husband have operated in Waupun since 1968. Their son Leon has been an active partner since 1975 in the family business.
A sign over the display shelves states "No Preservatives nor Additives in our products". That is a welcome sign to folks who want fresh food, free of the chemical additives found in so many of our foods today.
The Steenbergens came to Waupun in 1968 from Menominee Falls where Martin was a baker in a supermarket.
They bought the business from John Luteyn, who has since gone into business.
Martin's day begins at 3:30 A.M. when he begins the ten kinds of bread and other delicacies offered for sale. Sugar-free bread is also baked daily. Special cakes are baked for all occasions. Martin does the special decorating. They are open 7:00A.M. to 5:30 P.M.
Mary is a dedicated clerk and several other ladies working port time, are always happy to"wait on you".
John. Luteyn, former owner, was the last of a long line of bakers in the Luteyn family. Their family profession was handed down from generation to generation since 1809.
It all began in the time of Napoleon when John's ancestor Marys' started as an apprentice in a shop in Axel in Zeeland, Holland. He worked for the widow Dronkers, who owned the business. In 1809 he married his boss and the bakery became famous. While the original bakery has long since been closed the Marys' bakerys reputation in Axel is still famous for its excellent products. John Luteyn of Oostburg purchased the Bake-Rite Bakery from the G. J. Graneys in May 1949.
John's father, John P. Luteyn, who was a baker of fifty years, having learned his trade in Holland, assisted him.
Young John was a baker first class in the navy, having served in the Pacific and the Atlantic during his three and a half year term. He was employed in Los Angeles and Grand Rapids, Michigan bakeries prior to coming to Waupun.
Martin Steenbergen was born in Osc Holland and came to United States in 1950. He worked as a baker in Kimberly, Appleton and Menominee Falls before coming to Waupun. His wife is a native of Holland also.Acquisition
