Also a newspaper article dated, January 1, 1976, is part of this information about the Oak Openings Garden Club. Oaks Openings organized in 1950 at Mrs. Frieda Erdman's home; at that time ten members joined. We are a small club with eleven members and we have four charter members. At first we met at the Library and now we meet at the homes, each taking turns. We have a topic each time, many times its members choice. We study house plants, gardens, flowers of all kinds, trees & schrubs, wild life, birds, bugs, insects, worms, bees, etc. Oak Openings was a name choosen by Mrs. John Hester, a librarian at the time. Before Waupun was settled, it was known as Oak Openings by the Indians that lived here. Our club is affiliated with the National Council of State Garden Clubs & Wisconsin G. C. Federation & Fox River Valley District. Most of our group has attended flower shows out of town. Our projects through the years kept up & planted a flower bed at McCune Beach Park & later the swimming pool helped select planting for the old Library. Have a plant exchange each yr. make favors for Hospital, Christian Home, church projects, Bethesda Sale. Plan to plant a tree this year & call it the Liberty tree, 1976. Took a course in flower arrangments at the vocational school, taught by Mr. Sonn. Plant something differnet each year. Donated to the wild flower roadside. -------------------------------------------------- Newspaper article, Garden Club Notes 25 Years, dated January 12, 1976, taken from unknown source.
