Ohio House
One of the oldest and most historical landmarks in Waupun was razed in March 1969, to make room for progress. The building, known in the earlier days of Waupun's history as the Ohio House. It was located west of the railroad tracks on the south side of Main street.
It was one of Waupun's early hotels (built in the 1850's) and was operated by one of the oldest settler couples, Joshua and Sophia Crawford, grandparents of Warren G. Harding; 29th President of the United States. Both are buried in Forest Mound Cemetery.
The building had been in continuous use to the present time with no change except to be used as an architectural apartment house.
This was the site of the community's burial ground.
The first school house was located here; a one room log cabin used from 1844-47, when it was outgrown by the number of students.
The Ohio House exchanged hands many times in the 119 years of its existence; but for many years it was owned by Helen Scott who rented out several apartments. In 1968 it was sold to Nummerdor Brothers who sold it to Dick Golz for razing. The site is used for a used car parking lot.Acquisition
