Scope and Content

Historical information on Pythian Sister Organization for 1976 Bicentennial Celebration in Waupun, WI. *Facts are handwritten and was scanned with mistakes, if any, left uncorrected. Pythian Sister Organization The Pythian order was first organized in Warsaw, Indiana in 1888 by Joseph Addison Hill, with a membership of 35 Sisters. Within a year many requests for Sister Temples necessitated the forming of a Grand Temple in 1889. As subordinate Temples were established in other states, the formation of a Supreme Temple was imperative and established in 1890 at Indianapolis. The Grand Temple at Milwaukee was instituted in 1896. The Waupun Temple was organized in January 1909, with 25 Sisters and 19 Knights, listed on the charter as: Flora Amthor Mary Bogie Louise Brower Arletta Campbell Mary DeVos Martha Getchel Mattie Gunnison Emma Hanisch Anna Hanger Kate Hanson Nettie Jacobs Kate Lynn Ethel Marshall Lulu Marshall Edith Marsh Lorena Sanborn Bertha Spars Mary Stiles Gertrude Sweet Emma Thompson Bernice Towne Dorothy Turner Almira Walker Jane Walker Clara Zimmerman Otto Amthor J. She has been a member for nearly 55 years, having joined in February 1921. She tells of the many happy times when they held parties, dances, played cards, visited other Temples, initiated new members and honored the old, serving banquets to as many as 90 or more. We still enjoy the work of the Pythian Order and have social card playing. We have a banquet at inspection time, in honor of the Grand Chief. We have rummage sales and sell vanilla. We serve the Knight's annual banquet. Most of all we enjoy good fellowship. Good will offerings are taken at each meeting in support of the American Cancer Society, crippled and retarded children. We welcome new members.
