The Waupun Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
The Waupun Memorial Hospital Auxiliary was organized in 1951. At its first meeting held in November of that year approximately 60 ladies joined the group. An election as held and the following officers were elected: Mrs. Coleman Gadbow, President; Mrs. Watson Sterk, Vice-President; Mrs. William Lother, Recording Secretary; Mrs. John Hubner, Corresponding Secretary; Mrs. James Kastein, Treasurer.
The Auxiliary is a service organization serving the community through the hospital. Its main purpose is to aid the hospital in any way it is able, and its membership, which has grown over the years to approximately 200 members, does this by giving over 8000 hours of their time each year in volunteer work for the hospital. This time is spent in a variety of ways:
The first and, therefore, the oldest working committee in the Auxiliary is the Toy Committee. It has worked since 1951 making small stuffed toy animals. Whenever a child enters the hospital a patient, he or she is given one of these animals. This committee makes about 600 stuffed toys each year.
The Ways and Means Committee takes care of all special projects, and there are usually one or two each year. The most important is the Annual Parade of Homes. This committee has also published two cookbooks, and will hold its second Arts and Crafts Fair in April of this year. The profit derived from these projects over the years is many thousands of dollars. All of this money is used to buy needed of equipment for the hospital.
The Auxiliary maintains a Gift Shop in the hospital lobby. Members serve as clerks, buyers and make the many handmade items for sale in the shop. The Gift Shop also has a Christmas Bazaar in conjunction with the Parade of Homes each year. All the profit from the Gift Shop goes into a scholarship fund. Each year a number of scholarships are given to girls who are interested in medical careers.
The Auxiliary has a Mail Committee that sorts and delivers the mail to patients each morning. Another committee serves the staff breakfast once a month while yet another mends hospital linens and another supplies patient and visitor reading materials on each floor. There are members who work with the Health Careers Club and others who supply needed transportation for members. There is a Legislative Committee and a Child-Safe Committee.
One of the newest committees is in charge of the mini-TV sets which are available for patient rental. This project has found favor with the patients and is another source of income for the Auxiliary. All profit is also used for needed hospital equipment.
The Waupun Memorial Hospital Auxiliary meets four times each year. Membership is open to all women in the area. As an Auxilian once said: "It doesn't take any great talent or ability to be of service to others - each person can help in his own way." The Hospital Auxiliary, which will celebrate its 25th Anniversary during this Bicentennial year, welcomes new members.Acquisition
