Dear Jaycettes:
This being my fourth newsletter - where did the summer go? Happy thoughts getting the kids organized again for school and discovering Junior has grown out of last years slacks and can't go to school with his toes sticking out of his tennis shoes. Happy shopping Mother!!
Next week is my last week of vacation and hope to spend a leisure week - Wednesday - Membership Planning Session, Thursday - Coffee for local chapter members and prospectives, Friday - school shopping. Would love to spend Monday and Tuesday at Rhinelander at Region 6 Planning Session but must see how well organized I can keep things this week.
I hope all the gals in Region 5 and guests that attended my Brainstorming Session on August 3rd left with inspiration and more knowledge about Jaycettes, which I know they did. Over 35 were in attendance and couldn't ask for a more beautiful day. Thanks to all for attending and bringing the goodies - just like a smorgasbord. Enclosed, you will find the minutes and reports given. God bless that wonderful Anida Rose for her ''words of wisdom" on friendship. How at home we all felt as Region 5 maintains friendship and respect for each chapter member. How proud I am to be able to represent you.
For those of you who recall that much pregnant State Director and past president from Columbus, Nancy Bluemel - she had a baby boy five days later. Congratulations Nancy and Ralph!
As the time passed so quickly, we did not have time to discuss membership etc. Presidents and Membership Chairmen have received an invitation to the Membership Planning Session on August 28th and remember - bring the kids along. More on this later. With all of my chapters-represented (which I think is superb), everyone expressed a desire to meet again in the spring. Wish we'd have more time at these gatherings to chat and get to know one another better.
Last Thursday, I accompanied Sue, Jean Malin and Sylvia Hoeppner to Stevens Point to the Northern Brainstorming Session at Carol Gulliver's. You would never believe the representation - over 43 from nine chapters attending. This was the first opportunity I had had to personally meet the gals of the northern chapters and also to renew acquaintances. Others attending were Mary Jean LeTendre, Virginia Foley (this time she left her Honda in Milwaukee and flew in), and Judy Simonis. The enthusiasm and eagerness is really motivating. Wait until you see those membership goals on following pages!!
Saturday I will be attending Region 4 Planning Session, VP's Arlene Haunschild and Mary Dippold. Region 4 and Region 5 will surely make a large contribution towards membership of the Wisconsin Jaycettes.

JUDY SIMONIS, STATE MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN, has many, many exciting ideas in the double mailing you will be receiving soon so state Directors, PLEASE PASS THESE ON TO YOUR MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN. I hope each Membership Chairman has received their daisy char that was given to your president at Brainstorming. Please display these at your membership meetings to motivate these gals to recruit new members. Many sun-risen mornings were spent on these and hope all will make use of them.
President George has asked for chapter cooperation of 10,000 Jaycees by October 31st so here is our golden opportunity for Jaycee assistance and increasing our membership.
A FEW FACTS - Jaycees have a membership of 300,000, Alcoholics Anonymous 350,000 and the Elks Club 1,400,000. Let's accept this challenge and assist these young Men of action to spread the word to every young man in the state of Wisconsin.
C.A.R.O.L Award - At the Brainstorming Session, all southern chapters stated they will be participating in CAROL Award program. In the double mailing there will be: 1. General background information on the CAROL Award 2. Specifications 3. Plan of action for chairman 4. List of past winners 5. Letter to be sent to other civic groups 6. Newspaper release to be used to assist in recruitment of nominees 7. Newspaper release to be used once a local nominee of nominees has been selected 8. CAROL Award entry forms.
Please state the following on your IA-OK form - State Directors.
CAROL Award Chairman's Name and Address
We plan to submit a CAROL Award Nominee (yes) (no)
If not, why?
I will then send them to Mary Jean LeTendre as she requested. Following is a letter from her:
Dear Jaycettes of Region 5:
In 1957 a state Jaycette award was organized. It was fashioned after our Jaycees recognition of top men in the state and nation. Ours was named the CAROL Award. This means Citation for Achievement and Recognition for Outstanding Leadership. Since that time we have honored five women each year at Mid-Year Convention.
The September double mailing will contain all the information you will need to enter this state competition. BEGIN now, appoint a local chairman and committee. Organize a local file to review what efforts on CAROL have been done. Review your papers for possible candidates (this can be done at the library if 'necessary.) Plan publicity to encourage the surrounding communities to help you in your search for candidates. Write or preferably visit civic and church organizations to explain your project and encourage their help. BEGIN in your own communities but spread out into the surrounding area. Remember this is a state award. Each chapter should have at least one candidate but it is not necessary to limit the number. Submit as many worthy candidates as you find. You may have a winner! There are five presentations each year but each person involved in CAROL Award is a winner. Your club will be richer in learning to know local persons worthy of being CAROL Award nominees.
Finally follow through and plan a local function to honor your candidates (Christmas tea, luncheon) This is a state project and each club can and should enter. BEGIN now, don't wait! BEGIN now, when the tendency is to remain within ones own small world, to honor those who have the strength and courage to do more.
Remember if you have any questions, I will try and answer them. Remember you are a part of the state organization; we need you and want your participation. Help us select the women who most deserve the award-your award.
Sincerely,
Mary Jean LeTendre
State CAROL Award Chairman
MARY JEAN also has plans to hostess a room for the winners after the luncheon at Mid-Year where everyone can meet the winners, interview them etc.
PRESIDENT - If you haven't appointed a chairman, do so at once. This is an ideal project for that new member to acquaint her with one of the highlights of Jaycettes.
INTER-CHAPTER VISITATIONS - Note the meeting dates on the state mailing list.
If you wish to visit another chapter, write to their president. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to have you. I hope every chapter in Region 5 can visit at least two other chapters during the year. If any gals in the area are interested in accompanying me on my visitations, my schedule is as follows: September 11 Berlin November 11 Waupun
16 Stevens Point 18 Randolph
24 Oshkosh December 4 Portage
October 9 Columbus March 18 Fond du Lac

MENTAL HEALTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING INSTITUTE - October 16th & 17th - Sands Motor Inn in Milwaukee. Why not send your Mental Health Chairman and if possible, pay her registration and mileage and offer to babysit for her children so she can attend. More information may be obtained thru your local county Mental Health Assn.
"Further progress in the difficult field of mental illness and mental health will come only when millions of Americans know enough, care enough, and are willing to work together hard enough to make it come." Dr. Menninger -
Does your chapter know enough, care enough and are willing to work hard enough in mental illness and mental retardation?????. Adopt these programs into your plan of actions NOW. There is nothing more rewarding than working with the mentally ill or retarded and seeing how truly grateful they are for someone to share their time and really care.
EXTENSIONS - Hip, hip, hooray for Waupun - Ripon Jaycees have given their approval to organize a Jaycette chapter and Roger Noss, president, and his wife have given their full cooperation. Sure looks promising.
PLAN OF ACTIONS - I have received budgets and calendars of events for the year from Wautoma and Randolph. Congratulations gals - that's what I call "on the ball".
RICE DAY - November 27th - This is a religious activities project and our Jaycees have asked for assistance. 67% of the people in the world eat only rice. On Wednesday, November 27th, we will eat as they do - with the same alternative they have - rice or nothing. The purpose of the project is to make the following day, Thanksgiving, more meaningful, and also to make people aware of CROP - Church World Service.
CROP is an ecumenical effort that believes "rather than give a man enough fish to feed him for a day, teach him to fish and give him the tools to support himself for a lifetime." The $4.00 or $2.00 that you would have normally spent on the day's meals on Wednesday, November 27, is then to be given to CROP if you so desire. The project has community-wide appeal and kits will be coming out on it. A Rice Prayer Breakfast will be held on the Capitol lawn with the governor and other legislators, and hopefully, there will be Jaycee and Jaycettes in attendance from every chapter in the state. Contact your Jaycees and promote "Rice Breakfasts" in your town.
MARSHFIELD'S PROPOSAL to be voted on at the regional meeting -- "The chapter hostessing the spring regional meeting will be responsible for collecting $1.00 per chapter to purchase gifts for the State Vice Presidents of Region 5."
