The original Carrington or Boston House
"About one o'clock last Sunday morning, the Shipman House was discovered to be on fire, and in less time than an hour the building was entirely consumed. It is supposed that the fire caught from the kitchen chimney, and as the inmates were all in bed when the fire broke out, the flames were so far advanced that all that the folks in the house could possibly do was save themselves, and as a consequence nearly all the furniture, as well as most of the clothes and personal effects of the boarders and Mr. Shipman's family, were burned. The loss is estimated at $11,000, upon which there was an insurance of $7,000. Mr. Shipman contemplates rebuilding as soon as possible, which it is hoped he will do soon, as the loss of this house is severely felt by the traveling public."
An item which soon followed: "Since the burning of the Shipman House, Waupun has been rather short of Hotel Accomodations. In view of this fact, A. B. Kimball has fitted up his building on Main Street for a public house, and will open it to the outside world next week." May 12, 1871.
The Boston House had a number of proprietors--among them were Daniel Pierce and a Mr. Leo, before Mr. Shipman.
