Histories, Waupun Utilities & WaterDescription
Waupun Water. 1894-5. In October, 1894, after interest in a City Water System had been aroused by much discussion, demontrations of water pressure and financial consideration, the Coucil passed an Ordinance providing for the issue of $33,000 worth of bonds to install such a system. Contracts were made for well drilling and laying the pipes. The later proved to be difficult because the rock lies very close to the surfact in many parts of Waupun and much blasting was necessary. On November 1, 1895, the final account for construction was received and allowed and the Water-works Ordinance was declared in effect by the Council.
The public utilities were directed by the City Council until 1908 when the Water and Light Department was created by the Council to take over the operation of both the water and light plants. The city manufactered its own electric power until 1920. At that time a contract was made with the Wisconsin Power & Light Company for the purchase of Waupun's electric power. The arrangement has proven to be satisfactory and the Department has been very successful financially. The latest expansion in the Department was in 1934 when a city Water Softener was installed.
