More Wisconsin residents are going to be aware of Waupun's "End of the Trail" statue duing 1981 than have known about it since the statue was unveiled here more than 50 years ago.
As part of the series of covers to highlight points of interest in Wisconsin served by the Wisconsin Telephone company, the "End of the Trail," along with six other Wisconsin attractions, was selected to be featured on the 1981 telephone directory.
"Our staff spent many hours at the Milwaukee library searching for highly recognizable state points of interest," recalls Ed Wilson Wisconsin Telephone advertising staff manager and supervisor of the directory cover artwork.
"Waupun's End of the Trail statue was mentioned so often that it was only natural that it should be included on the 1981 cover."
Wilson said that it was a goal of the Wisconsin Telephone company to make not only Wisconsin residents, but state visitors as well, aware of the state's attractions.
"All of those which are selected are within an easy day's commute of the nearly 100 exchange areas served by the Wisconsin Telephone company," Wilson pointed out.
More than two million large size 9x11 inch covers were printed for larger communities, while another half-million small covers, similar to those used for the Waupun exchange, were put into circulation this year.
