Articles as shown on back of photo: First article - Eighty-eight prisoners, holding 14 hostages, staged a 13 1/2 hour protest Wednesday in the Industrial shop of the State Prison (right) at Waupun Correctional Institution. The inmates ended their siege and released their hostages after being promised amnesty and given assurances that a hearing would be held on their grievances, including the easin of prison rules and an increase in pay for their daily work. A number of fires occurred as prisoners lobbed five gallon containers of paint thinner from the windows to the ground below, but the fires were extinguished quickly. - Journal Photo by George P. Koshollek Jr. Second article - Waupun The Fortress A walled city - that's Waupun Correctional Institution, and that's where nearly 1,100 convicts are massed in a regimented society with 277 guards. The prison is overcrowded. It was designed for 804 inmates. An aerial view (right) shows the locations of the penitentiary's various facilities which are enclosed by a 20-foot-high wall. Besides the guards, there are 145 other civilian personnel employed at the prison. Third article - Areas Taken Over - Buildings taken over at Waupun Correctional Insitution are labeled, based on best available information, on this 1976 photo. the circles show where disturbances erupted Monday morning, according to carl Manthe, assistant warden at the prison. information indicated that inmates had taken over the first and second floors of the dormitory and the second floor of the south end of the building marked dining hall.
