The Old School Bell
By Robert Gorsuch
Bells are made to be rung
But there you are
Silent
Unneeded
Enshrined on a pile of bricks
A memorial to a memory
That will fade with the passing generation
Once your raucous clamor
Brought panic to a laggard schoolboy
Struggling to avoid the embarrassment
Of being tardy
With each aching breath a prayer
That it was only the "first bell"
But certain in his heart it wasn't
And he was late again
Keep silent, old bell
