School was conducted in a variety of buildings in both communities for a number of years. Fox Lake was noted for hiring the first licensed teacher to teach in Dodge County (not all teachers were licensed at the time) and for operating the first tax-supported school in Dodge County. In 1860, the schools in Waupun split into two districts, divided by Main Street, each with its own school. The South Ward School was on the site currently occupied by the public library, and the North Ward School was on Franklin Street, the site of the old middle school. The two districts each operated as separate bodies, with their own high schools, until 1899. In the meantime, Fox Lake built a combination elementary and high school, which served the community until 1950. In 1899, all the high school students in the city of Waupun attended the same school, the old South Ward building, for the first time since 1860. In 1913, the old North Ward building was demolished and replaced by a new high school (the oldest portion of the just-vacated Waupun Middle School). That same year, the athletic field was dedicated as Oshkala Field. Over the years, additions and renovations were made to the 1913 structure. In 1925, a one-story addition was built on to the Waupun High School, and the floor of the original gym was excavated to a depth of five feet to add more height. Also in 1939, a combination gymnasium/stage area and eight classrooms were added. In Fox Lake, efforts began in 1920 to build a new high school, due to the age of the structure then in use. A number of attempts were made over the next few decades, finally resulting in success when a new elementary/high school was built on Depot Street in 1950 (the current Fox Lake Elementary School). In the mid-1950s, discussions began regarding the construction of a new high school in Waupun. This led to a decision in 1960 to build a new school north of the Rock River (the old high school/current middle school). While the building was under construction, the Fox Lake district was consolidated with the Waupun district, and it was decided to build a larger building than originally planned. In 1970, the building was enlarged in order to allow it to operate as a four-year school. For over 150 years, the taxpayers and citizens of the Waupun and Fox Lake areas have been committed to quality education and have shown that commitment by their support of quality facilities in which education can take place. Our new high school is a continuation of that commitment to quality. Acknowledgements There are several people, organizations and businesses we wish to acknowledge. First, thank you to all members of the school staff, to the members of the school board both past and present, and to the members of the referendum and planning committees, who gave so unselfishly of their time and effort to make this building a reality. Deep appreciation, also, to the electors of this school district who demonstrated their belief in the value of education with the investment of their capital. Thank you to Bray Associates and Westra Construction for their large part in the construction of our School. Finally, thank you to Alto Dairy Cooperative, Brandon Meats, Gysbers' Supermarket, Piggly Wiggly, and Waupun Super Valu for donating refreshments. A Special Tribute to James R.
