Biography of Florence Ely Loomis. Source: First Ladies of Wisconsin, The Governor's Wives by Nancy G. Williams, p. 174-176. July 24, 1893: On this date the wife of Governor Orland S. Loomis was born. Orland defeated incumbent governor Julius Heil in 1942, but died of a heart attack before he was inaugurated. Mrs. Loomis graduated with honors from the UW in 1916 and taught at Mauston and Waupun high schools for many years. She was very active in the local historical society, library board, woman's club and hospital. Mrs. Loomis had a very active and happy family, which included three children, twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
