WHY
POLICE
DOGS?
Police Dogs are a great value to law enforcement because they have qualities that can be used to help police do their jobs. A dog's sense of hearing is up to eight times more sensitive than that of a human. Their sense of smell is hundreds of times more sensitive. With these superior senses, police dogs have proven their usefulness in many circumstances, accomplishing tasks that a human simply cannot do.
Police dogs all over the world are finding lost children, apprehending dangerous criminals, and locating millions of dollars worth of drug-tainted money and concealed narcotics. Police dogs are not all that new. Police dogs got their start in Belgium around the turn of the century. To date, the most commonly used dog is the German Shepherd. The Shepherd is known worldwide for loyalty, bravery and as an excellent all around service dog. German Shepherds are capable of performing many tasks, including tracking, building and area searches, drug searches, crowd control, criminal apprehensions and officer protection.
Here in Waupun, a German Shepherd named "Jake" and his handler, Officer Jeanne Frost are working hard to provide some of the same valuable canine services to the area.
A LITTLE ABOUT "JAKE"
K-9 Jake is a German Shepherd that came to the Waupun Police Department from Czechoslovakia in October of 1994. Jake's full name is Juro Acro CS 01198... we call him Jake. Jake is trained as a patrol/narcotics dog. Some of his duties include tracking, building and area searches, narcotics detection, officer protection and apprehensions. Jake is trained to respond only to commands in his native language, Czech.
WHO HANDLES JAKE?
Officer Jeanne Frost is Jake's partner, handler and trainer. Jeanne has been a police officer since 1989 and started working with Jake shortly after he arrived. Jeanne and Jake met in October 1994 at the North Central Canine Institute in Muskego, Wisconsin.
WAUPUN'S K-9 PROGRAM
Officer Frost and Jake work together during the 11pm-7am shift. They patrol the city just like the other officers and answer calls for assistance. After the shift is done, Jake goes home with the family. Officer Frost is responsible for Jake's grooming, feeding and normal exercise that dogs need to stay healthy. During off-duty time, Officer Frost and Jake are subject to call-in at any time for any agency that may request the services of K-9 Jake.
WHAT ABOUT TRAINING?
Training for the canine team is constant to ensure proficiency in all areas. Each year Officer Frost and Jake must return to the training school in Muskego, WI to be re-certified.
Almost every day Officer Frost and Jake are doing something pertaining to training. They constantly work on obedience, agility and Jake's searching capabilities.
Officer Frost and Jake also participate in Police K-9 Competitions where they compete against other police K-9 teams from Wisconsin and other areas of the United States.
DEMONSTRATIONS AND PUBLIC APPEARANCES
Officer Frost and Jake are available for special appearances and demonstrations. Schools, community service organizations and church groups are encouraged to inquire about a canine demonstration. These demonstrations are tailored to any age group and are offered to the public FREE OF CHARGE.
PROGRAM FUNDING
Funding for the Waupun Police Department Canine Unit comes from public support. Fund raising activities are held throughout the year to raise funds to purchase food and equipment for K-9 Jake. Donations are also accepted at public appearances, and at the Waupun Police Department to be placed in the Waupun Police K-9 Fund at the National Bank of Waupun.
