DENTISTS
I believe Dr. Lyall Stewart was the first dentist in Waupun. He was born in Scotland in 1833, came to Waupun in 1854, and lived here the remainder of his life -- until 1910 -- except when in Madison studying his profession. In 1861 he married Rose Chittenden, daughter of his instructor, Dr. Chittenden. He was prominent professionally and had served as president of the State Dental Society. Dr. and Mrs. Stewart were fine vocalists and prominent in social circles.
In November 1879 we read: "Dr. E. L. Ferry, Surgical Dentist. west set of teeth $10.00; fillings, gold $1.00, silver 50 cents and bone 75 cents. 7 years experience. Will call at residence if desired."
In 1857, Dr. S. T. Randall, surgical dentist, had his office over Dodges' store.
On November 21, 1882 Dr. G. A. Hildreth: "Best set of teeth $8.00, warranted best material. Teeth extracted without pain." I think he came over from Fond du Lac a day a week and was called the "Painless Dentist."
In 1863, J. E. Wade was a dentist in Waupun.
In 1857 we find this intriguing advertisement: "Dr. E. M. Thorpe, demonstrator of mechanical and surgical dentistry, formerly at Syracuse, now at Manitowoc and coming to Waupun. Will warrant work to be perfectly useful for mastication and the teeth inserted to closely resemble the original. References: H. L. Butterfield, M. D.; Rev. Mr. Robbins; Honorable E. M. McGraw; A. J. Spear and M. M. Flint, officers at the prison."
Now we come to more familiar names. In September 1890 we read: "T. M. Welch, D. D. S., late graduate of Chicago Dental
