Business, Histories, Vande Kolk DairyScope and Content
the VandeKolk Dairy was bought on Sept 15th1926. It was bought from Mr. C. A. Gibson who lived where LeRoy Brooks lives now North of Waupun. My dad got a team of horses and a milkwagon, all the milk equipment, milk cans, cooler cans, bottles, ice box milk, cooler in which ice and water was in lower section, milk flowed down from container above. Plus 150 custermers. Which in those days took about 200 quarts of milk daily, also 15 1/2 pints whipping cream. The price of milk was 10¢ a qt, cream was 15 cents a half -pint. At that time there was the Rens dairy - Randall. Freriks Chapin Vande Dairy was noted for their rich Guernsy milk, when the cream was taken off of a quart of milk, it could be whipped. Chapin also had Guernsy milk. My brother Garrit Vande Kolk left for service in June 1941 and returned in Oct. 1945. Gloria VandeKolk (sister) started delivering when Garrit left for service. Bernard and Gloria delivered with one truck. 'When gas rationing came, the route was split and every other day delivery was started. Garrit bought the business from his father and later had two delivery trucks. He had one route and Gloria the other route. The business was sold April 1st 1973. Due to Gloria's getting married.
