Note, Diorama, Jesus and Disciples, Mechanical Operations

Scope and Content

1 Diorama of the disciples and Jesus. The diorama is mechanical and the key is included. Note that came with the Jane Redman Diorama. Mechanical (keywound) diorama. It is 30" by 40" and 10" deep. The materials used are cardboard, paper mache' and the windows and doors (city of Jerusalem) have inlayed mother-of-pearl. The frame is oak and put together with square nails. By pressing a button, Christ's tomb (center of picture) opens and closes. Romans in front of the tomb march on a belt, and there are 3 crosses in the background, which raise and lower. Information received some years ago from the Art Institute of Chicago indicates the diorama is probably of 19th century date, and probably English or Irish origin, with the original idea taken from an Italian or French piece.
