Abigail Smith Adams The wife of the 2nd President of the United States Born 1744 in Weymouth, Massachusetts of parents in great prestige on both sides, Abigail lacked formal education but spurred with curiosity and intelligence she read the books at hand. This reading created a bond between her and John Adams. They were married in 1764, and the marriage endured almost half a century. They lived on a small farm in Braintree or in Boston as his practice in law expanded. They were blessed with five children in 10 years, three sons and two daughters. When Abigail joined her husband in Paris, where he was a diplomat, she paid close attention to the manners of the French. These manners made her a successful and popular hostess for her husband. As wife of the Vice-president Abigail became good friends with First Lady Martha Washington and a valued help in official entertaining, drawing on her experience of courts and society abroad. After his precedency, the Adams family moved to their home in Quincy, where Abigail died in 1818.
