Shaler Line of Vulcanizers
INCLUDES models for every requirement of motorist or repair shop. They are made in the largest factory in this country which devotes its entire energy to making a line of vulcanizers. Consequently, Shaler Vulcanizers, from the smallest to the largest, are the product of experts whose life work is to make vulcanizers and make them right.
The purchaser of a Shaler Vulcanizer gets his money's worth in service and satisfaction because every Shaler Vulcanizer is made so that we can guarantee it to work perfectly in his hands.
The name SHALER on vulcanizers is an absolute guarantee of quality. Since our first vulcanizer was made, early in the history of motoring, we have held to this ideal.
Few garages are without at least one of our machines. Many hundreds of thousands of motorists are using them successfully. The U. S. Government as well as many foreign governments have set their seal of approval upon them by repeated purchases for various departments. Practically every auto accessory jobber catalogs and recommends Shaler Vulcanizers. In short, the Shaler line is accepted as standard by everyone connected with the automobile industry.
If You Sell Accessories
The tourist model Shaler Vulcanizers are acknowledged by the trade to be among the best selling accessories on the market.
These popular necessities fill a demand which has been created by twelve years of constant advertising to motorists. The display stands, hangers, circulars, etc., which our service department supplies, enable dealers to keep the Shaler outfits before their customers with a minimum of effort. The result is a rapidly increasing volume of profitable business for many thousands of dealers because almost every motorist needs some model of Shaler Vulcanizer.
Shaler Vulcanizers are the most widely known line - the only vulcanizers advertised to motorists - the only ones they can recommend to their friends by name. Anyone can easily see their superiority in design, workmanship, finish and operation. They are the safest vulcanizers - no dangerous exposed blaze and no loose liquid to slop over and burn up a tire.
Every dealer in accessories will find it profitable to carry a small stock and use the display material which we furnish.
4 Quick Selling Accessories for Motorists
THE 5-MINUTE VULCANIZER Type M, No. 5
Complete with Six Round and Six Oblong Patch-&-Heat Units
The Shaler 5-Minute Vulcanizer is one of the easiest accessories to sell, not only because of the exclusive advantages that make motorists prefer it to patches and other temporary substitutes, but because it is backed by one of the largest campaigns of national advertising ever put behind any accessory.
More than a million motorists now carry it in their cars for emergencies. Many have discontinued the practice of carrying a lot of spare tubes that deteriorate before they are ever used, since they have found out that it is as easy and quick to vulcanize a punctured tube and put it back, as it is to change tubes. The Shaler 5-Minute Vulcanizer makes real heat-vulcanized

repairs that are far superior to any stuck-on patch because they are permanently welded to the tube.
Possibly the most important feature of this vulcanizer is the patented Patch-&-Heat Unit. Heat is produced by burning a non-flaming chemical fuel. The correct amount of this fuel is encased in a metal pan which acts as a vulcanizing surface and in addition protects the fuel from damage while carried in stock or in the car. The patch of raw rubber is attached to the vulcanizing surface, ready for use.
To vulcanize a repair, this complete unit is simply clamped over the puncture and the fuel lighted. In five minutes the repair is done. Only the patch is heated and it is moulded under pressure so that its edges are flush with the tube, leaving no chance for it to start to come loose without tearing the tube.
Anyone can use it - no danger of overcuring - no trouble, and no bother. Besides mending tubes, this vulcanizer has no equal for repairing other rubber articles such as boots, rubbers, water bottles, etc.
Each outfit includes twelve Patch-&-Heat Units, six round and six oblong, and the nickel plated vulcanizer, all packed with sandpaper for cleaning tubes and full instructions in a handsome display box. Weight 1 lb. One dozen in carton.
Type M, No. 5 - Retails at $1.50
EXTRA PATCH-&-HEAT UNITS
The average user buys several packages each season. Few accessories produce such a continuous resale opportunity. Hundreds of thousands of Shaler 5-Minute Vulcanizers already in use have created a demand for patches from dealers who carry them in stock.

THE POPULAR VUL-KIT Type G, No. 32
Gasoline Heated - For All Sized Casings and Tubes
The sales of this well known tire saver have grown enormously as tire prices have advanced. Few accessories have been on the market as long as the Vul-Kit with continuously increasing sales.
Now is the time to feature it and take advantage of the big national advertising that makes the name Vul-Kit familiar to every auto owner.
Caption in photo; [SAVE TWO THIRDS YOUR TIRE EXPENSE with a SHALER VULCANIZER Nip Blowouts in the Bud Mends Tubes Too]
Tire manufacturers and dealers everywhere recommend it as the sure means of doubling tire mileage by sealing casing cuts before dirt and water get in to rot the fabric. Casings always need attention that will only be given if the motorist has his own vulcanizer. It is the stitch in time that saves nine. Dealers find that the customer who has learned the simplicity of vulcanizing through the use of the little 5-Minute Vulcanizer is a particularly good prospect for the Vul-Kit too, to use at home.
The Vul-Kit has a 3 ½ x 4 inch curved surface which is used for mending cuts, sandpockets, etc., in all sized casings without removing tire front wheel or letting the air out of it. A machined surface of 10 square inches mends all tube injuries, curing clear through and making permanent repairs of any size. The asbestos inlaid pressure plate is swivelled in to avoid squeezing one side of tube tighter than the other and to enable the largest tube be handled without pinching its edges.

A lamp burning gasoline or alcohol produces the correct heat without dangerous exposed blaze or smoke. A measure gives the proper fuel charge, eliminating watching or regulating. The fuel is absorbed by a wick so there is no loose liquid to spill if accidentally overturned.
Handle detachable for packing to carry in car. Complete with repair rubber, cement, fuel measure, and full directions. Polished nickel. Weight 4 ½ lbs. One dozen in carton. This model should always be in every accessory stock and kept prominently displayed by means of the fixtures we furnish, as it has an appeal for every motorist.

THE FORD-KIT Type H, No. 33
Gasoline Heated - For Ford Size Casings and Tubes
Dealers who cater to owners of Ford cars and other cars using the smaller sizes of tires will find it profitable to recommend this tire saver where something less expensive than the Vul-Kit is demanded.
The Ford-Kit is similar to the Vul-Kit in its safe and convenient use of the ever-present fuel, gasoline, and differs from the Vul-Kit only in that it is especially designed for vulcanizing 3 inch and 3 ½ inch casings and tubes, and in the simplified clamping device which permits a less expensive construction.
While tubes are mended only when a tire goes flat, casings almost always have cuts and sandpockets in them that will soon develop into blowouts unless the motorist can easily and conveniently repair them himself. It is inconvenient to take the tires off and take them to a repair shop, so these little damages are usually neglected with the result that a tire seldom gives more than half the mileage of which it is easily capable.
The Ford-Kit enables anyone to do this work quickly and without the slightest danger to his tires. No dangerous exposed blaze, or smoke, or loose fuel to spill. Vulcanizing surfaces 3 ½ x 4 inches. Handle detachable. Nickel plated. Full equipment of vulcanizing material, fuel measure, and instructions furnished. Weight 4 ½ lbs. Packed one dozen in carton.

For Motorists Who Want The Best 11
HOME GARAGE MODEL Type D, No. 83
Heats From City Lighting Current - Thermostat Heat Control
This model will handle every kind of tube and casing work that the average motorist will care to undertake. It has no equal for use at home where practically all of one's tire repairing is done.
Dealers should recommend it as absolutely the best motorist's vulcanizer for use wherever electric current is accessible because:
1. Both the tube and casing surfaces are 3 ½ x 7 inches - twice the size of any other motorist's vulcanizer - and larger repairs are made by resetting.
2. Electricity is the one perfectly safe heat for vulcanizing, and does not conflict with any garage regulations.
3. The thermostatic temperature control not only maintains the exact vulcanizing temperature so that a tire cannot be injured by overheating, but by maintaining this temperature as long as necessary, permits curing through the thickest tread as well as making superficial repairs which require only a brief application of heat. Upon connecting the vulcanizer to any lamp socket, the temperature quickly rises to the required degree and remains there uniformly as long as the current is turned on. Therefore, when several repairs are to be made in succession, as is usually the case, the hot vulcanizer can be moved from one to the other by means of the cool handle without loss of time. Since the temperature control is independent of current fluctuations, no watching or regulating is required. All adjustments are made at the factory and there is nothing to get out of order.
Caption under photo: [Repairing Tube]
4. The patent heating unit distributes heat uniformly to all parts of the repair.
5. One or two tubes can be mended at a time on the asbestos shelf.
6. The clamping device, which is swivelled to insure uniform pressure all over a repair, and a specially curved vulcanizing surface, make this the only motorist's vulcanizer which works equally well close to the bead or on the tread of a tire.
A complete vulcanizing outfit is supplied, including tube shelf, ten-foot conducting cord, Government tested thermometer, repair material, and illustrated instruction book, all packed in a neat wooden case.
Current consumption only 70 watts per hour. Weight 13 lbs.
Specify voltage of your current when ordering. This model furnished for use on city lighting current of any standard voltage without extra charge.

Shaler Vulcanizers for Repair Shops and the Exclusive Wrapped Tread Method of Casing Repair.
There are two important things to consider in vulcanizing equipment. First, the method used; and second, the machine itself.

Caption under photo: [Apply cement for at least six inches all around the blowout and let it dry.]

On the following pages you will find descriptions of the various types of Shaler Vulcanizers for all requirements of the repair shop or garage. Some of these machines are heated by steam, some by electricity; the purchaser may choose to suit his convenience. Both styles have the exclusive features that have made Shaler Vulcanizers the equipment of more than thirty thousand repair shops in the United States alone - automatic temperature control, and the use of the efficient Shaler Wrapped Tread Method for casings instead of the sectional method which some repairmen still use.
These features make it possible for any ordinary garage helper, without previous vulcanizing experience, to make every kind of repairs that it would be practicable and profitable to make with any vulcanizer.
There is plenty of capacity for quantity work, too. Types NPR, No. 41, or ACE, No. 101, with a single set of casing forms that fit all sizes of tires, will keep two men busy all the time. Type NPR, No. 42 has twice the capacity for casings.
The simplicity of the Wrapped Tread Method is well shown in the illustrations on these pages. It is especially adaptable for the garageman who is just starting in the tire repair business as well as for the shop handling large quantities of all kinds of repairs. The following advantages of this method are easily seen:
Money Making Shop Equipment 13
1. Less repair material and less time are required for preparing repairs than with any other method.
2. No costly airbags are necessary.
3. All sizes and styles of tires are mended without molds or extra fixtures. This does away with a great deal of complication and expense.
4. The repair is heated from the inside and outside at the same time, thereby shortening the time of curing and doing away with all tendency to overcure a tire.
5. The construction of the repair is mechanically as strong as the rest of the tire so that running the tire flat will not loosen it.
6. The tire is not disfigured as in sectional repairs.
7. Shaler equipment costs less than half as much as the cheapest sectional equipment of equal capacity.
We do not manufacture vulcanizers for retreading because it is evident from our long study of the situation that retreading is not usually profitable for the repairman or his customer. As a rule motorists do not think about retreading a tire until the fabric is so badly worn and rotted that even if it is possible to make a new tread stick, the tire will blow out before long and the repairman then gets the blame for spoiling it.
Sometimes a tire can be retreaded with profit to the owner but it does not pay any repairman to invest in the expensive equipment that is needed and have it standing idle most of the time waiting for such a job. Experienced repairmen agree that it is most profitable to handle the repairs that they can take care of with their present help and with inexpensive equipment, and then send the retreading work to someone in a large city where there is sufficient of that work done to keep a plant busy.

STEAM VULCANIZING PLANT . . . . Type NPR, No. 41
Heated by Gas or Gasoline
This vulcanizing plant handles every kind of tube and casing repairing that it is practicable and profitable to do with any shop vulcanizer - even equipment costing several times as much.
The casing forms take care of all sized repairs on all sized tires, both smooth tread and non-skid types. The outside form has two ample working surfaces, one for treads, the other for work down on the sides of a tire. The system of curing from inside and outside of a tire at the same time enables even large blowout repairs to be finished in less than an hour, so that the

daily capacity of this machine is about ten casings. Two men could hardly prepare more tires than that in a day. In addition, the tube plate - 4 3/4 x 30 inches - will be turning out six tubes every twenty minutes or nearly two hundred daily. In other words the output of this compact outfit is limited rather by the quantity of repairs that can be prepared than by its size although it requires no more room than a bicycle and can easily be moved around the shop even while in operation.
No vulcanizer, no matter how elaborate or complicated, can do more, except possibly handle retreading, and any tire expert will tell you that a retreading plant is an expensive investment to have producing nothing most of the time.
This is the only steam vulcanizer with automatic temperature control built into it. Therefore it is the only one with which it is impossible for even a careless operator to overheat a tire. After lighting the burner no further attention is necessary. Steam is raised to the vulcanizing pressure in less than half an hour and this pressure is maintained by a thermostatic damper that automatically regulates the flame as long as the burner is lighted. This feature is a great time saver as well as a protection, because it enables the operator to devote all of his time to the preparation of repairs instead of having to watch the steam pressure and attempt to regulate it by hand.
Since the machine heats as quickly as the first repair could be prepared, it can be put into operation even when only one tube is to be cured at a time. This quickness of heating is obtained by the use of a water tube boiler, a copper coil that efficiently uses the heat from the burner.
The cost of operation is very low as the entire day's output of about $100 worth of repairs requires only a gallon of gasoline for fuel.
Caption under photo: [Heating Apparatus of Steam Vulcanizing Plants While steam is being raised the flame goes directly thru the copper coil boiler. As the vulcanizing temperature is approached the thermostat automatically lowers the damper so as to switch part of the flame thru an auxiliary flue away from the boiler, and thus give just enough heat to hold this temperature.]
