WHY EVERY ENGINE NEEDS A RISLONE KARBOUT TUNE-UP
Every engine that uses motor oil, or gasoline, will gradually lose power as soon as it is put into service. This is caused by gums which are deposited, constantly, on valves, guides, lifters, rocker arms, rings and other moving parts. Usually this loss in performance is so gradual that the average driver does not notice it until he feels a bad buck or jerk when pulling.
These gums are caused by decomposed motor oil, and by stale gasoline. Recently, gums from stale fuels have combined with motor oil gums to cause a serious epidemic of sticky valves, and inoperative hydraulic valve lifters.
Car owners rarely know why their cars don't operate as well as they did when brand new but they do know that they haven't the old pep; they ping; they buck; they start hard; valves are noisy. YOU know, of course, that sticky valves which are caused by gums are the cause of their troubles, so you just have to keep telling them the facts, over and over again, until you impress them with the fact that you know how to give them relief.
You have to remind the owner - man or woman - every 5,000 miles that his engine needs a TUNE-UP. You do tell them about changing oil, so instead of selling your customers a plain oil change, why not sell them a TUNE-UP, which includes an oil change, and make the extra profit? When you sell a plain oil change, your customer can't FEEL any improvement in performance, but when you sell an oil change in a TUNE-UP, you give them a definite money back guarantee that they will feel the better performance of their car. An engine that has been using heavy duty and detergent oils will usually respond to a TUNE-UP better than one using regular or premium types. This is because some of these oils have a glazing effect on walls, rings, and valve-lifters. A TUNE- UP will show a marked improvement - quickly - when that is the case, and the customer will notice a greater difference. Neither Rislone nor Karbout is a detergent; they are SOLVENTS. They do not simply loosen the sludge formations inside an engine and hold it in suspension. Rislone and Karbout actually disperse and dissolve these deposits and destroy their harmfulness. You can safely add Rislone to ANY oil or gasoline; and you can safely add Karbout to ANY gasoline.
SHALER RISLONE TUNE-UP SERVICE is a standardized system to restore normal performance to any engine by the simple means of an oil change, the addition of a fixed amount of Rislone to the oil, and the injection of a fixed amount of Karbout into the gasoline and through the carburetor air-inlet. IT IS A CHEMICAL TUNE-UP; one that is guaranteed to produce FEELABLE improvement in engine performance - immediately - and this guarantee is backed up by the reliable jobbers and distributors who sell Shaler products, and by THE SHALER COMPANY.
No special equipment is required to perform TUNE-UP SERVICE.
No special training or experience is needed to TUNE-UP an engine. Anyone who knows how to drain and refill the crankcase, and understands how to remove the air-filter from the carburetor inlet can do a TUNE-UP by simply following the TUNE-UP PROCEDURE.
However, every automotive man and woman should understand WHY a TUNE-UP is necessary periodically; why gums form; where gums originate; why gums are detrimental to engine performance; and why only those old-reliable chemical twins - Rislone and Karbout - can complete a TUNE-UP.
Since your profits come from the products and services that you sell to an owner, you should always tie-in other sales with a TUNE-UP, if you yourself believe that you are doing the customer a favor by suggesting other services.
For example, since you are draining the oil when you TUNE-UP, wouldn't you be doing the customer a favor if you suggested a lubrication job while you have the car on the hoist?
If you check the battery and find one cell low, your customer would appreciate your telling him about it, and putting in a new battery.
If you noticed that the spare tire was flat, surely you should put on a safe Hot Patch while you were doing a TUNE-UP.
The simplest sales story is one based upon honest facts. You never have to make untrue claims for a TUNE-UP. If you, personally, believe that a TUNE-UP will help your customer, tell him so.
Try to talk to your customer, when he comes to your station; show an interest in him and his car by asking questions. For example, ask him one or more of the following questions:
- do you notice any unusual noises when you start your engine in the morning?
- does your car buck and jerk at low speeds?
- is the engine as smooth as it used to be?
- do you smell gasoline odors in the garage in the morning?
- does the engine have all the power you want?
- does it accelerate easily, smoothly, without ping?
- does it start hard when cold or warm?
These are all symptoms which prove that a TUNE-UP would help.
Sell your customer on this theme - "What can you lose with a guarantee like I give you on a
SHALER TUNE-UP?"
Sell your customers GUARANTEED FEELABLE IMPROVEMENT.
Recommend a RISLONE KARBOUT TUNE-UP whenever the following conditions exist:
1. Sharp, regular clatter in the engine, especially right after starting in the morning or after the engine has stood idle for a few hours.
2. Engine is rough and uneven when idling.
3. Buck at low speeds or when pulling hills.
4. Hard starting, especially when warm.
5. Excessive ping when accelerating or pulling.
6. Mechanics have said that a valve grind was necessary.
7. General sluggishness, loss of power, or poor acceleration.
8. Backfire in carburetor when throttle is suddenly opened.
9. Popping noise in muffler when decelerating or descending hills.
10. Sticking or sluggishness of automatic choke.
11. Strong odor of gasoline in garage in the morning.
12. Carburetor flooding or loading.
Any of these symptoms can be caused by sticky gums from motor oil or stale gasoline; therefore the best possible remedy is a TUNE-UP.
Read these symptoms to your customers and notice how often they say that they are noticing some of them. That is your opportunity to Sell them a guaranteed TUNE-UP, and do them a favor, at the same time.
Remember - EVERY automotive engine should be TUNED UP every 5,000 miles. If YOU don't do it, some other service station will.
This is the standard SHALER TUNE-UP procedure which must be followed by all authorized
SHALER TUNE-UP Service Stations
1st step - Drain old motor oil.
2nd step - Replace oil-filter cartridge, if you have sold this operation to the customer. (Extra charge, of course.)
3rd step - Pour 2 quarts of Rislone into the crankcase, and turn engine over with starter for 10 seconds in order to circulate pure Rislone through the oil lines.
4th step - Fill crankcase to capacity with a good brand of either SAE No. 10 or SAE No. 20 motor oil.
5th step - Pour I can or bottle (8 ounces) of Karbout into the gasoline tank.
6th step - Start engine and let it warm up. While it is warming up, remove the air-filter from the carburetor air-intake.
7th step - With the engine idling, pour 1 can or bottle of Karbout into throat of carburetor as fast as the engine will take it without stalling.
8th step - Shut the engine off and let it stand until customer wants delivery; the longer it can stand and soak up the Karbout, the better. This would be a good time to do the lubrication, washing and polishing jobs, or to replace the spark plugs that may have been suggested to the owner.
9th step - When car is turned back to customer, explain just what "feelable" improvements to look for on the way home. Explain that the engine will discharge a pale blue-white smoke for a mile or so; that this is good because it shows that the Rislone and Karbout chemicals are cleaning out the engine.
IF IT DOESN'T SMOKE A LITTLE, IT ISN'T A SHALER TUNE-UP.
SHALER TUNE-UP Service Sells
The story of TUNE-UP Service is a chemical tune-up procedure and will enable you to sell more and more oil changes. Every customer resents the procedure indulged in when he drives onto your service floor and merely an oil change is suggested. Customers resent the idea of pulling the dip stick out of the engine and having it presented with the statement that the oil is dirty and should be changed. For all you know the oil may have been changed in the last 24 or 48 hours.
It is much more simple to induce a customer to have his oil changed by suggesting a TUNE-UP Service. The use of Karbout will immediately clean up intake valves and help remove gum and carbon formations in the upper part of the cylinder. The addition of Rislone in the crankcase with fresh oil will materially improve the performance of the engine by eliminating sticking valves, gum and sludge formations, so that moving parts of the engine can function freely. Subsequently it will facilitate starting in all weather, make possible faster acceleration, restore lost compression and power, and assure a quieter, smoother-running engine. A mere oil change cannot possibly do these things.
CAR OWNERS appreciate the Rislone-Karbout TUNE-UP Service because improvement in engine performance is feelable - so do car factory engineers and engine builders.
FLEET OWNERS and transportation companies who keep maintenance records will appreciate Rislone-Karbout TUNE-UP Service because it helps reduce maintenance costs and keeps their equipment on the road - not in the shop.
FARMERS appreciate Rislone-Karbout TUNE-UP Service because it improves the performance of their tractors, trucks and stationary engines and protects their equipment during idle months.
TUNE-UP Service is profitable. Check the cost of materials used against the return you receive for this service. No other service in your shop can possibly render a comparable profit and guarantee the customer satisfaction.
Among many other things, the Rislone-Karbout TUNE-UP Service will help you to sell:
Car wash and polish jobs
Oil filter replacement cartridges
Air cleaner service
Spark plugs
Fuel filters
Wiper blades
Tires
Batteries
Radiator service
Lighting service
and a host of other things.
Of course, you should always sell the owner what you really feel he needs - but never cross him up by selling him something just for the sake of a sale, and always sell him reliable products, made by reputable manufacturers, and distributed by recognized wholesalers.
The Rislone which is used in your TUNE-UP Service may rightfully be called a chemical lubricant and you can safely use it even 100% for almost any type of lubrication. Thousands of Rislone enthusiasts regularly use Rislone straight in their engines. Karbout, its companion product, not only frees sticking valves immediately but when used regularly with the fuel will eliminate or prevent the formation of gums in the fuel lines and carburetor.
Rislone is also highly recommended wherever fluid lubrication is used. Some of the most popular applications are:
Air compressors
Butane engines
Clocks
Diesel engines
Electric motors
Gas engines
Hydraulic systems
Machine tools
Marine engines
Mill machinery
Phonographs
Record changers
Refrigerant compressors
Speed reducers
Stationary engines
Steam turbines
Watches
and all internal combustion engines.
If you would like more detailed information relating to the products, Rislone and Karbout, used in the TUNE-UP Service program, ask your wholesaler for a copy of "Engine Performance." A postcard addressed to The Shaler Company, Waupun, Wisconsin, will bring a copy quickly.
SHALER TUNE-UP GUARANTEE
The TUNE-UP guarantee is this simple: if the customer isn't completely satisfied that he, or she, feels an improvement in engine performance - in smoothness, or power, or acceleration - you will refund the entire cost of the TUNE-UP except the charge for new motor oil. The Rislone and Karbout which was used in the TUNE-UP is theirs, without cost. The customer isn't taking any chances when he orders a TUNE-UP from you; he can't lose.
Here's how you handle any refund: fill out one of the refund slips, have the customer sign it, then refund the entire cost of the TUNE-UP LESS the list price of the new motor oil. For example, you would refund the customer $3.70 (2 quarts of Rislone $2.50 and 2 cans of Karbout $1.20) leaving you $1.25 for the 3 quarts of oil you put in, if you had charged $4.95 for the TUNE-UP.
Turn the completed refund slip in to the jobber who sponsored you and he will give you 2 quarts of Rislone and 2 cans of Karbout - free.
The first guarantor is YOU - you whom the customer trusts, or he wouldn't be your customer.
Your first guarantor is the wholesaler from whom you bought your Rislone and Karbout, and who sponsors you as an "AUTHORIZED TUNE- UP SERVICE STATION."
The Rislone Central Distributor is the final guarantor.
WARRANTY
KARBOUT and RISLONE are guaranteed not to contain kerosene, gasoline, abrasives, rust removers, graphite, carbon-tetrachloride, harmful acids, oxygenated fish oils or other ingredients which can harm the most delicate parts of any internal combustion engine.
