The following steps were taken in the conservation of the statue: 1. It was photographed before and after treatment. 2. It was cleaned with high pressure water and scrub brushes. 3. After removing dust and encrustations, it was again scrubbed with a mild detergent to remove grease and graffiti. 4. It was rinsed with water repeatedly. 5. A selective patina was reapplied to the statue. (hot) 6. A non-yellowing ultraviolet light resistant acrylic lacquer was applied to the statue. At the base of the statue is an inscription that reads (Guido) "Nelli Bronze Foundry Los Angeles." That is where it was made in 1939-40. Clarence Shaler signature is on the base it reads, "C. A. Shaler ." The 2 dedication plaques at the base are to be treated in 2007. They are also bronze. Note: Semi-annual maintenance will be required, that is washing the statue down with water, a garden hose would be fine, to take off grime and encrustations or dirt, and approximately every five years the lacquer needs to be examined and probably retouched, and about every 15 years the lacquer needs to be stripped and renewed. Thank you. Tony Rajer Art Conservator The conservation of the statue was supported by SOS Save Our Sculptures, which is a local group of citizens who sponsored a revival of interest in the city's public art collection over a 14 year period.
