Name/Title

Postcard, First Day Commemorating James Earle Fraser.

Description

First day commemorating James Earle Fraser, 1876 - 1953. "Fraser studied under Richard Bock at the Art Institute of Chicago and under Augustus Saint Gaudens in Paris. He became one of the most prominent American sculptors of the first half of the twentieth century. His favorite subjects were associated with the American West, where he grew up. Many of his major works are displayed in the Fraser Memorial Studio at the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. The design for the ten-cent value of the Americana series is his Contemplation of Justice." Fraser did The End of the Trail in Waupun. It would be logical that the postage stamps on the envelope were designed by him. The date of the postmark is November 4, 1977. Notice also that Abraham Lincoln is the other work shown.
